The banana was purchased for $0.35 on the day of the auction.

The final sale price was four times Sotheby's initial estimate of $1 million to $1.5 million. The artwork started at $800,000 and reached $5.2 million, plus a buyer's premium.

Sotheby's called it "Passionately debated, rhapsodically venerated, and hotly contested."
