The White House has invoked a rarely used 1798 law to expel over 200 alleged members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, citing national security concerns.
The law, part of the Alien and Sedition Acts, allows the president to deport foreigners in times of war or “invasion.”
Donald Trump claims the U.S. is “at war” and argues that the gang poses a criminal threat.
Legal experts dispute the law’s application in peacetime, raising constitutional concerns. A federal judge temporarily blocked the expulsions, but the White House has appealed, potentially taking the case to the Supreme Court.
